The Chemistry
Department designated three NMR spectrometers for general routine use.
Which
spectrometer will you use? Those wishing to characterize
synthetic products in solution usually use Lutz (Varian
Inova 300) or Ireland (Varian
MercuryPlus 300). Burger (UnityInova 500) is
used mainly for solution work on large molecules and dilute samples.
A prospective user of the facility should follow the links above to
obtain information on the characteristics of the available
spectrometers, rules regarding
spectrometer reservation, and to
read the description of the electronic instrument
scheduling system. The operating policies reflect the need to protect
the instrumentation investment
as well as to maintain a safe, efficient environment for all users.
All users are expected to have a basic
knowledge of nuclear magnetic resonance. All users must use the
scheduling system before
using a spectrometer, regardless of the amount of instrument time
needed. To get access to the scheduling system, new users are required
to meet with the NMR facility manager, Yana
Goddard.
New users are
encouraged to read the Instructions
for operation of UVA Chem. Dept. spectrometers and obtain training from either
a senior member of their lab or Yana
Goddard. If you obtained training from a senior member of your lab,
you are still required to set up a meeting with the facility manager
prior your first independent measurement in the laboratory.
