Changing the Probe
GN/Tecmag-300

(These instructions assume you are familiar with basic Macintosh procedures, if you are not, see a Macintosh manual or the tutorial which is on most Macintosh computers. Throughout the following, MB means mouse button.)

You should get assistance the first time you do this procedure.

Keep all metallic objects, credit cards, and mechanical watches away from the magnet.

Start MacNMR, open the Console window, open the Air window and eject the spinner and sample. Turn off the eject air. Before exiting the AIR window, look at the circle to the left of VT air, if it has a black dot inside move the cursor to the black dot and click the MB. Open the left door of the right spectrometer console and locate the sample variable temperature (VT) control unit at the top left (it has a red LED temperature indicator). Turn off the VT unit by using the black switch on the left side of the unit.

Remove the 3 rf cables, the VT cable, and the 2 hoses from the probe. Move the spring-loaded washers away from the probe and let the probe drop slowly out of the magnet. Insert the probe that you wish to use and make sure the VT gas port is pointing toward the center of the room. Replace the spring-loaded washers. When replacing the VT hose, push the VT hose over the probe VT dewar opening only about 2/3 inch, not as far as possible. Replace the body air hose. Replace the VT cable at the bottom of the probe. Replace the rf cables, the cable coming from the HB (high band) port on the probe interface goes to the DEC port on the probe. The probe interface LOCK port should be connected to the LOCK port on the probe. The probe interface LB (low band) port should be connected to the OBS port on the probe.

The knob at the top of the probe interface is a frequency band pass filter. It should be set to 7.5 for C-13 and 9 for P-31. It is not used for H-1.

Go to the VT unit and turn on the VT power. Go to the computer and turn on the VT air. Insert your sample and tune the probe if necessary (ie. if the previous user of the probe used an observe frequency that is different than the observe frequency which you will use).
