1. Which spectrometer will you use? Those wishing to characterize synthetic products in solution usually use lutz (Varian Inova 300) or ireland (Varian MercuryPlus 300). The Lab Description page has information on the characteristics of the available spectrometers. Instructions for Operation of UVa Chem. Dept. Spectrometers has links to detailed instructions for spectrometer operation.
2. Look at Instrument Use Policies to see rules regarding spectrometer reservation. Look at Instrument Scheduling System to see a description of the electronic instrument scheduling system. All users must use the scheduling system before using a spectrometer regardless of the amount of instrument time needed.
3. Obtain a log in name and password for the scheduling system on ernst.chem.virginia.edu and the spectrometer that you wish to use from a senior member of your lab or Jeff Ellena (Rm. 127, 924-3163).
