Window Manipulation
VNMR, the program for controlling the spectrometer and processing data uses
several windows. The limited video screen size does not allow one to view the
entire contents of each window simultaneously. Therefore one must sometimes
manipulate the positions and levels of the windows in order to view their entire
contents. There are 5 major VNMR windows. The three windows covering most of
the screen are (from top to bottom): the master window, the graphics window,
and the text window. One often sees two smaller windows on the right hand side
of the screen: the Acquisition status window and the Acquisition window. Windows
can be brought to the top level of the desktop by clicking on the window. If
one wishes to temporarily shrink a window to reduce desktop crowding, one can
move the cursor to the window border until it becomes a horizontal or vertical
arrow pointing to a line. One then holds down the right mouse button, drags
to Minimize, then release the mouse button. The icons representing the
minimized windows will line up at the top right area of the screen. To restore
the iconified window to its original state, move the cursor to the icon,
and double click the left mouse button. More information on window manipulation
can be found in the Sun Solaris Common Desktop Environment Answerbook. See
Varian and Sun Manuals to go to the AnswerBook index. Then double click

Varian and
Sun Manuals
There are both hardcopy and on-line versions of the Varian manuals. Do
not remove the hardcopy manuals from Rm. 106. The following manuals
are particularly useful for new users:
VNMR Basic Operation
VNMR System Operation
VNMR Quick Reference
To access the on-line manuals, log in as described in Login and Logout, put the cursor on the desktop pattern,
hold down the right mouse button, drag to Online Manuals and release
the mouse button. A new window with the on-line manuals will pop up. (This may
take 10-20 seconds). When you are finished with the manuals, move the cursor
to File at the top left region of the window. Hold down the right mouse
button, drag to Exit and release the mouse button.
There are a number of on-line Sun manuals, one can access these in the following
way. Log in, if necessary, as described in Login and Logout, move the cursor to the area with small
horizontal lines at the extreme bottom right of the screen and click the left
mouse button to raise this window to the top of the desktop. Click on the arrow
above the icon consisting of books and a question mark. A pop-up menu will appear.
Click on AnswerBook and an index of Sun manuals will appear. (This may
take 10-30 seconds.) When you are finished with the index and any other Sun
manual windows that you have opened, close the windows. Windows may be closed
by moving the cursor to the horizontal bar at the intersection of the top and
right borders of the window. Hold down the right mouse button, drag to Close,
then release the right mouse button.
